Fatal Crash After Fleeing Vehicle Involved in Theft
A tragic incident occurred on Highway 401 in Whitby when a fiery crash involving five vehicles left four people deceased, including two grandparents and a baby. The crash occurred following a robbery at an LCBO store, with the fleeing vehicle involved in the fatal collision.
The Ontario Provincial Police responded to the scene, along with emergency services. The highway was shut down in both directions from exit 406 Lake Ridge while crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
An additional five individuals sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified and is investigating the incident, as it involved a police vehicle. The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police and civilians.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing. The LCBO robbery and the subsequent flight of the suspects remain under investigation by the Durham Regional Police.
